Powdered slippery elm bark is derived from the inner bark of a North American species of elm called ‘Red Elm’ or ‘Ulmas Rubra’
The inner red elm bark has been used for centuries by Native Americans/American Indians for a range of healthcare applications - the main benefit of slippery elm is its soothing mucilaginous effect, which comforts a range of interior and exterior conditions.
Internally slippery elm can be used for soothing a sore throat and for calming digestive issues such as heartburn or acid reflux. It lines the entire length of the digestive tract and as such, is often suggested by natural healthcare practitioners for all types of digestive issues such as IBS/IBD, ulcers, colitis and chron’s disease.
Native American’s used slippery elm in healing salves Cor wounds, boils, ulcers, burns and skin inflammation, whilst also using it internally to relieve coughs, sore throats, diarrhoea and other stomach problems.
Precautions
As with any supplement, it can trigger unwanted side effects when used in conjunction with other herbs, supplements or medications and for these reasons you should ONLY take natural supplements under the supervision of a healthcare provider.
Slippery elm bark is not known to have any serious side effects, but due to it coating the digestive tract it can slow absorption of some medications. It’s usually advised that you leave a two hour gap before or after herbs or medications you may be taking, but this obviously needs to be agreed and directed by your healthcare provider.
DO NOT take any herbal medications or supplements whilst pregnant or breastfeeding, unless under a doctors supervision.
